Second IISc near Kolkata

Deccan Hearld has reported that West Bengal will get the second Indian Institute of Science. Here is the news;

A second centre of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will come up near Kolkata with an investment of Rs 500 crore, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said on Tuesday.

The Centre, on the pattern of the Bangalore-based institute, will be spread over a 200 acre campus at Kalyani in Nadia district, Bhattacharjee said inaugurating the 13th West Bengal state Science and Technology Congress.

“The Prime Minister has approved of the centre and central grants worth Rs 500 crore have been sanctioned for the institute,” he said.

I could not get further details from any other sources and hope Abi gives outsiders inside view on this.

This is a really good announcement. I am glad that Kolkata gets this second campus. I hope they do not convert the existing Indian Association for Cultivation of Science as the second IISc campus. This should be a new ground-up thinking. Will write more on this as details emerge.

  3. Hi Venkat, The Kolkata institution the Great One (I mean, Buddha) is talking about is one of the two Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IIScER); the other is to come up in Pune. During the Science Congress last January in Hyderabad, the Prime Minister also announced a third such institution at Chandigarh.

    If you are wondering why they have added ER (Education and Research) at the end of the names of these institutions, be assured that I too am left wondering about it …
